SANTANA LIVE IN CONCERT WITH
SPECIAL GUESTS THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - APRIL 2017

Legendary guitar virtuoso, multi Grammy Award winner and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, CARLOS SANTANA, and his band SANTANA, are coming to New Zealand on his Transmogrify Tour to play one Auckland show on Tuesday 18th April at the Vector Arena. Tickets are on sale Tuesday 29th November at 12 noon local time.

SANTANA last toured New Zealand in 2013, playing Auckland with The Steve Miller Band in what one reviewer described as an ‘exceptional’ double bill. Delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, SANTANA returns to our shores performing songs from over four decades of his career including hits and songs of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

This time around, the mighty DOOBIE BROTHERS will join Santana as Special Guests, adding to both artist’s already announced appearances on the mammoth bill for the 28th Annual Bluesfest in Byron Bay.

In addition to playing Auckland with Carlos Santana, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS will be takin’ it to the streets of Wellington, playing their own one-off show at the TSB Bank Arena on Thursday 20th April. A global enduring favourite of the 1970’s, The Doobie Brothers combine a touch of blues, and plenty of soul and rock ‘n roll to create their nostalgic Californian rock sound. Their celebrated back catalogue of music includes hits like ‘Listen To The Music’, ‘Long Train Runnin’, ‘What A Fool Believes’ and so many more.

The passion infused, melodic sound of CARLOS SANTANA’s guitar is one of the world's best-known musical signatures. For more than four decades - from Santana's earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco - Carlos has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural and geographical boundaries.

From Woodstock to the Hollywood Bowl and everywhere in between, CARLOS SANTANA is one of the most prolific and influential guitarists of all time. In a career spanning more than forty years, Santana has sold in excess of 100 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts across the globe, with no less than ten Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards to his name. 1999’s Supernatural album saw Santana chalk up a record-tying nine Grammy’s for a single project, including awards for Album of the Year and Record of the Year for ‘Smooth’. Among many other honours, Rolling Stone has cited Carlos Santana as #15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

April 2016 heralded the release of SANTANA’s 24th studio album, Santana IV, featuring sixteen all-new tracks and claiming a No.5 Billboard Top 200 debut. Fans were thrilled to have the original late-1960’s lineup featured on the record, the same band that performed at Woodstock; Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums).

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS’ legacy has been built not just on hit records, but also on an unrivalled commitment to musical integrity and a steadfast allegiance to their enthusiastic fan base. The band’s ability to evolve in a constantly changing industry and connections to generations of listening audiences is a testament to their craft. With founding members Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, and 30 year-plus veteran John McFee, The Doobies will be performing as a seven-piece band including Bill Payne, Ed Toth, John Cowan and Marc Russo.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, have won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 48 million records worldwide (including three multi-platinum, seven platinum and fourteen gold albums). Their 1976 Best of the Doobies has sold more than 12 million copies, earning rare RIAA Diamond status. Their No.1 gold certified singles ‘Black Water’ (1974) and ‘What A Fool Believes’ (1979) lead a catalogue of hits that includes ‘Listen To The Music’, ‘Jesus Is Just All Right’, ‘Rockin’ Down The Highway’, ‘Long Train Runnin’, ‘China Grove’, ‘Take Me In Your Arms’, ‘Takin’ It To The Streets’, ‘Minute By Minute’, ‘You Belong To Me’ and ‘The Doctor’. In all, The Doobies have tallied five Top 10 singles and sixteen Top 40 hits.

SANTANA will touch down in New Zealand with Special Guests THE DOOBIE BROTHERS straight off the back of a multi-year residency at the famous House of Blues in Las Vegas. He will be set to ignite stages across the country once again, with a style that fuses Latin rock, blues, soul and jazz, transcending time and the limits of genre typecasting.

SANTANA will play one show at Auckland’s Vector Arena, Saturday 15th April
with The Doobie Brothers as special guests.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS will play a standalone show at
Wellington’s TSB Bank Arena on Thursday 20th April.

#581 :: LIVE Blues Recording Wednesday :: James Cotton (RIP), Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters (22 March 2017)

The Blues Room #581
Wednesday 22 March 2017
9pm-10pm NZ time, FreeFM89.0

This episode is dedicated to the late James Henry Cotton aka Mr Superharp (July 1, 1935 – March 16, 2017). Not only was Cotton one of the greatest sidemen of Muddy Waters, but Cotton was a master in his own right as band leader of his own blues band. This episode features a fantastic LIVE recording of Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, and James Cotton on tour promoting Waters' 1977 album, Hard Again.

It was at a time when Johnny Winter had only recently recovered from past addictions and blues giant Muddy Waters was facing a decline in his career brought on by illness as well as the 1975 collapse of Chess Records. Steve Paul of Blue Sky brought both musicians together. The results of his investment soon paid off and Winter's childhood dream of playing alongside his hero Muddy Waters came to fruition on the album Hard Again in 1977. Hard Again had a raw, expressive feel and hearkened back to Waters Chess Records days, and the outstanding musicianship and intimate exuberance exceeded all expectations earning Waters a Grammy.

The Hard Again tour combined the respected powerhouse of Waters, Winter, and James Cotton with musicians from the Hard Again sessions. Although this particular collaboration was short-lived, it has provided blues fans a rare opportunity to indulge in the work of three hugely important musical figures whose respect for each other is evidently unflinching. Two live albums, Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live and Breakin It Up, Breakin It Down, have allowed a glimpse of the concerts from 1977 and '78, but this Boston performance has never previously seen the light of day. Echoes proudly presents the entire WBCN-FM broadcast of a performance at the Boston Music Hall on February 26, 1977, digitally remastered. Thank you James Cotton, thank you Johnny Winter, and thank you Muddy Waters. You are BLUES. Nuff said. Enjoy.
