The Blues Room Reaches Its 400th Episode!

Episode 400, 18 September 2013

About 8 years ago I started The Blues Room with a passion to help keep the blues alive. 400 episodes later I still have the passion and I can say the blues most certainly is alive and well in Hamilton, New Zealand. Hosting a weekly radio show (or in my case 2 weekly shows!) comes with its challenges but it also has its rewards. Its been a mission getting myself organized and up into the Free FM studio by 8.45pm each Wednesday but to have someone text or phone the studio to ask, 'wow, who's that you're playing?' or to have someone let me know they appreciate turning on the radio to hear blues music has made it all worthwhile.

I've met some truly awesome people along this journey, too many to thank all at once here but I couldn't have done it without them. Free FM 89.0 has been excellent in allowing me to broadcast my show, Phil Grey the manager has given me full support as have his team of staff. Many local musicians and overseas acts have provided their support and music, some have paid a visit to The Blues Room whether in person or via the phone by way of an interview, like Thomas Oliver in this episode. Darcy Perry has believed in me and been a blues mentor along the way. To all the blues lovers and listeners who have kept me going week in week out to bring you a weekly serving of fresh, cool blues, I just want to say thank you, thank you very very much!!
Heres to another 400 episodes!

1. JD McPhearson - I Can't Complain
2. Tab Benoit - Matchbox Blues
3. Taj Mahal - Built For Comfort
4. Buddy Guy - I Came Up Hard
5. Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite - She Got Kick

Darcy Perry: Blue September 2013 [#398]

My good friend Darcy Perry is in the studio with me to talk about Blue September - a prostate cancer awareness campaign - and about his new album called, Eleven Long Years. Darcy is releasing his entire back catalogue, including two previously unreleased live albums along with his new album thats been five years in the making. Albums will be available for pre-sale from August 23. The release date is Friday, September 6, with digital download/streaming on iTunes, Amazon, Amplifier, Deezer, Google Play, Rdio and Spotify. All proceeds from album sales go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Darcy has lost a father-in-law, a friend, and grandfather to cancer.

“It’s about getting the message out there that it’s OK to go to the doctor. Prostate cancer kills more than 550 men in New Zealand every year. Thousands more are diagnosed – many of them far too late. By going and getting a check-up from the age of 40, you are not only taking responsibility for your own health, you are also ensuring we have communities with more dads, sons, brothers and grandfathers.”

The show starts with an appropriate tune by Muddy Water's son, Mud Morganfield called Health. The message Mud delivers in this song has so much relevance for men today. Listen up! Plus we hear some NEW! tunes off Darcy's newest album, Eleven Long Years. Enjoy!

Rich DelGrosso: Modern Mandolin Master [#396]

Episode 396, 21 August 2013

I'll never forget hearing the sound of Rich DelGrosso's blues mandolin at Byron Bay's Bluesfest in 2007. This was the first time I had heard someone playing live blues mandolin. I had heard it on record before, Johnny Young was the very first, but I had never heard it played live at a concert. As I stood in awe listening to Rich DelGrosso, Mookie Brill and Fiona Boyes' performance at Bluesfest that year I never dreamed I'd have Rich as a special guest on The Blues Room. Nor did I realize that I'd never see another performance featuring blues mandolin as good as that.

Rich is such a wonderful guy whose full of musical experience and talent. Here I interview him from his home in Houston, Texas. What a privilege for me! Please check him out at http://www.mandolinblues.com/ and be sure to see him perform if you ever get the chance. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

More Mandolin Blues with Gerry Hundt [#395]

Episode 395, 14 August 2013

I first heard about Gerry Hundt through Ronnie Shellist when I interviewed Ronnie about his blues harmonica projects and new album in episode#342 . Gerry had performed mandolin on a few of Ronnie songs and one of them became my immediate favorite, its called Shoes (hear a sample).

Here Gerry talks about his career as a musician and about his passion for the blues mandolin. I never realized just how much of a role the mandolin has played in blues music. I'm glad Gerry accepted my invitation to be interviewed live to air, it made the time about 4.30am for Gerry! Gerry's musical talents don't just stop at mandolin, hes a multi-instrumentalist and can play guitar, harmonica, bass, piano, drums, lap-steel just to name a few.

Next week I'll be interviewing another great mandolin player, Rich Delgrosso, and asking him all about his experiences with the blues mandolin. In the meantime, enjoy this episode, featuring Gerry Hundt.

H is for More Harmonica Masterclass with David Barrett [#387]

Episode 387, 19 June 2013
Heres part two of my interview with David Barrett (harmonicamasterclass.com, schooloftheblues.com, blueshramonica.com). I've had great feedback regarding part one, and some much appreciated feedback while part two was going to air so thank you to everyone whos shown support for what I'm doing here. For me its a labour of love - I love what I'm doing and I'm doing what I love. Anyways, enough small talk, heres the questions and songs played for this episode. And big ups to Mark who answered last week's question correctly, he wins the new CD by Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, 'One Wrong Turn.'

Question: You have rubbed shoulders with and had opportunity to play harmonica with some of the greatest modern harmonica players like Charlie Musselwhite, Lee Oskar, Rod Piazza and Kim Wilson and with great blues musicians like Jr. Watson, Rusty Zinn, Nick Moss and John Garcia, just to name a few. What have been some highlights for you meeting and performing with many of these great artists? What valuable lessons have you learnt from your experiences with these artists?

As a teacher and instructor of blues harmonica, what seems to be the most common mistake or aspect about your students learning that keeps reoccurring?

In your opinion, what bugs you most about harmonica players in live band situations, whats the biggest weakness or mistake harmonica players seem to make when playing with bands?

In short, what makes you unhappy about harmonica players?
1. Mitch Kashmar & Pontiax with William Clarke- Horn of Plenty
2. William Clarke - Goin Steady

Q: Musical ruts are where things don’t seem to flow or where the passion seems faint and most musicians find themselves in one every now and again, what advice can you give to those in musical ruts?
What has worked best for you when trying to get out of a musical rut?
3. Little Walter - Rocker

Q:  How has your harmonica playing changed over the years?
4. Flávio Guimaraes with Peter Madcat - Muddys's Ukelele

Q: What would be your greatest strength when playing harmonica, and what would be the thing you’d most like to improve?
5. David Barrett - LeftOvers

Q: I remember hearing Jerry Portnoy saying, in reference to those seeking the best amps and mics for harmonica playing, ‘rubbish in, rubbish out.’ Would you agree?
How important is practicing and mastering your instrument?
And how important is having the best equipment i.e. amp & mic?
6. Muddy Waters/Jerry Portnoy - Jerry Portnoy's Boogie

9. Which living person do you most admire?
Flávio Guimaraes with Joe Filisko - Joe's Reggae

Q: What do you enjoy doing the most when you are not performing, teaching or working on your music?
If music was denied you, your other career choice would be . . . ?
Thank you David, in closing, if you could have one super power what would it be and why?
10. David Barrett and John Garcia - Don't Fight It
11. George Harmonica Smith - Blowing The blues
12. William Clarke and the Night Owls - Hittin' Heavy
13. Mitch Kashmar and the Pontiax - Petroleum Blues

3. Mark Hummel introduces Gary Smith / Gary Smith - She's So Fine

Trevor Reeki's list of who hes interviewed on his Radio New Zealand's National Radio show called Access All Areas over the past years is really impressive. Hes interviewed artists from the punk to funk, and rock to roll genres and so many in between. And when I asked him for an interview on this, my last show for New Zealand Music Month 2013, he accepted without hesitation.
I guess you could say this is an 'interview with an interviewer.'

Those interviewed by Trevor include Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Bob Brozman, Gary Atkinson of Document Records, and Jack Holzman of Elektra Records just to name a few. Check out the rest of his interviews at the link above for a pleasant surprise, I'm sure you'll see many interesting artists you're familiar with and many you'll learn about for the first time. Enjoy!
