The Blues Room #207 Blues with a Feeling: Songs of Little Walter, Part 1

The Blues Room #207 Blues with a Feeling: Songs of Little Walter, part one - 30 Dec 09.

Little Walter, born Marion Walter Jacobs (May 1, 1930 – February 15, 1968), was an American blues harmonica player whose revolutionary technique has earned him comparisons to Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix for its innovation and impact on succeeding generations. His virtuosity and musical innovations fundamentally altered many listeners' expectations of what was possible on blues harmonica. Little Walter's body of work earned him a spot in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, making him the only artist ever to be inducted specifically for his work as a harmonica player.

His legacy has been enormous: he is widely credited by blues historians as the artist primarily responsible for establishing the standard vocabulary for modern blues and blues rock harmonica players. His influence can be heard in varying degrees in virtually every modern blues harp player who came along in his wake, from blues greats such as Junior Wells, James Cotton, George "Harmonica" Smith, Carey Bell, and Big Walter Horton, through modern-day masters Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, William Clarke, and Charlie Musselwhite, in addition to blues-rock crossover artists such as Paul Butterfield and John Popper of Blues Traveler.

In this episode I feature music from of my favorite artists and bands that pay tribute to the music of the harmonica genius, Little Walter. Stay tuned for part two!

BLUES LEGEND JOHN MAYALL TOURING NZ APRIL 2010

Blues Legend John Mayall touring New Zealand April 2010

The blues doesn't get much more exciting than this! John Mayall is of course a pioneering English blues singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical career spans over fifty years, but the most notable episode in it occurred during the late '60s, when he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.

As a gifted talent-scout, Mayall has been influential in the careers of many instrumentalists, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, and Don "Sugarcane" Harris.

John was born in 1933 in the small village of Macclesfield near Manchester (as was Ian Curtis of Joy Division). This skinny English lad grew up listening to his father's jazz record collection and felt drawn to the blues. In the late '60s John moved to London where he turned professional and went under the name John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He soon met his soulmate in Eric Clapton, and this historic union culminated in the first hit album for the Bluesbreakers, 'Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton' (1966), and resulted in worldwide legendary status. In 1969, with his popularity blossoming in the USA, John released his classic acoustic live album 'The Turning Point'. Over the years, John has released several albums that have set new standards in rock blues, namely 'Behind The Iron Curtain', 'Chicago Line', 'A Sense Of Place' and the Grammy-nominated 'Wake Up Call'.

2009 saw the release of John's 57th album, 'Tough', and, as for the man himself, the father of six and the grandfather of six, John Mayall, at 75, hopes to keep the blues alive for many more years to come.

The Blues Room #204 JP Blues Band and some Christmas Cheer

The Blues Room #204 JP Blues Band and some Christmas Cheer - 9 Dec 09

JPBlues started playing guitar at the age of 8 and was quickly taken under the wing of legendary bluesman Sam "Bluzman" Taylor. At age 11 he was playing large festivals throughout the country, opening for such artists as Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, Joe Bonamassa among others. The list of artists that JP Blues have performed with is just as impressive, Michael Falzarano(Hot Tuna), Chris Beard, Debbie Davies, Pete Sears(Jefferson Starship), Buddy Cage(New Riders) and so many more. With all this experience under his belt JP Blues has put together a powerful blues trio consisting of industry veteran Drummer Pat Adkins (Gary U.S. Bonds, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, BB King) and bassist John Young. With JPBlues searing, soulful blues guitar backed by the solid rhythm section of Bassist John Young and Veteran touring/session drummer Pat Adkins the JPBlues Band combines a unique mixture of youth and experience that results in music that breaks new ground but is firmly rooted in the blues.

Another electrifying artist announce for Bluesfest!

Electrifying second announcement for Bluesfest 21st celebration!

Playing Schedule online + One Day tickets now on sale

November 29th 2009 - The second major round of artists to perform at the 21st Anniversary Bluesfest has today been announced! Australia's most awarded and internationally renowned festival officially will be held at its permanent new home – at the Tyagarah Tea Tree farm just off the Pacific Highway, 12 minutes north of Byron Bay. The Easter weekend dates for your diary are Thursday April 1 through to Monday April 5, 2010!
Festival goers should also note that the new and updated playing schedule is now online, and one day tickets are now also on sale – just visit http://www.bluesfest.com.au/ to see it all. This announcement marks the first time so many artists (over 50) have been unveiled this early, along with the playing schedule – giving fans more time than ever to plan their Easter holidays.
The second Bluesfest announcement for 2010 includes:
The Fray, John Butler Trio, Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Taj Mahal, John Mayall Matisyahu, Angus & Julia Stone, 10cc, Bebel Gilberto, Rodriguez, Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Ross Wilson's Five Decades Of Cool, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, Josh White Jr, Patty Larkin and The Greencards.
The new names join the major artists announced in October which included:
Crowded House, Buddy Guy, Roger Hodgson from Supertramp, Gipsy Kings, Orquesta
Buena Vista Social Club®, Jeff Beck, Lyle Lovett, RocKwiz, Jimmy Barnes Plays the Rhythm & the Blues, Jessica Mauboy, The Swell Season, Newton Faulkner, Dr John & the Lower 911, Bèla Fleck's African Project Featuring Oumou Sangarè & band, Blue King Brown, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia, Gogol Bordello, Fat Freddy's Drop, Joe Bonamassa, Peter Green & friends, The Flatlanders, Avett Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Renee Geyer, Colin Hay Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lil Band o' Gold, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, AND Robert Gordon & the Gang They Couldn't Hang - featuring Chris Spedding (Roxy Music), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), and Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats).
As well as joining those in the very special November Jack Johnson announcement:
Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ozomatli, Galactic, A.L.O (Animal Liberation Orchestra), Matt Costa, Zee Avi, and Neil Halstead.
Phew, how is that for a line up with major 21st party WOW factor?!?
Festival director Peter Noble said, "You can't have your 21st birthday party without having a line-up that is on par with your best ever bill – and we're overjoyed with how this one has come together! Our most loyal fans talk about 2004 and 2008 in hushed, reverent tones, and I think 2010 is right there or even better.
"Also without a doubt – this is our best BLUES bill ever now that we have the legends Taj Mahal and John Mayall joining the stunning Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Peter Green and Joe Bonamassa – my goodness!
"To delve into today's announcement: The wonderful John Mayall hasn't joined us since the second ever Bluesfest back in 1991! Taj Mahal is a Byron favourite that gets busier and busier every year, so who knows when we'll see him again? The Fray has had a #3 Australian chart album in 2009, and are massive with their cross-generational appeal and great songwriting. 10cc I saw 2 years ago and they blew everyone away as such a creative art-rock band, and I'm excited to say will precede Roger Hodgson from Supertramp as part of our classic rock show on the Sunday night! Rodriguez was a huge hit in 2007, and he's coming back to do his remarkable thing again we're excited to say. The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker are just unmissable live – a dazzling blend of old-school soul and 21st century funk. Folks, it's true – we can't wait for Easter to come!"
More room for camping in the Heart of Bluesfest!
Remember – Bluesfest 2009 was held at Belongil Fields and accommodated 1,800 campers. Bluesfest 2010 looks forward to welcoming patrons on its own land – and will accommodate approximately 6,500 campers! The very spacious and natural environment is right next to the festival grounds and will include a general store, showers and toilets.
The festival itself will feature more space, more music, more stalls, and more areas to chill out, but is all about keeping in the Bluesfest tradition, which is about creating an environmentally sound, peaceful, relaxed and happy home for everyone. Regular shuttle buses will be included to and from the festival into Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and surrounding towns.
More awards for Bluesfest
Yes our Bluesfest 21st event will be a MASSIVE party – but it will also be a RESPONSIBLE one. September 2009 again saw Bluesfest recognised as an international winner in The Greener Festival awards. This was for an impressive three years in a row, more than any other Australian festival - and a tribute to the event's ongoing and long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

Bluesfest was also the first music festival to be nominated for a prestigious Australian Events Award. Bluesfest was nominated for the Best Cultural or Arts Event alongside the Sydney Festival 2009 and Adelaide Fringe 2009. The award eventually went to the 16th Biennale of Sydney. Bluesfest was also recently nominated as the Best Overseas Festival in the UK Festival Awards!

Unlike any other Australian event, Bluesfest has twice had the honour of being nominated as Best International Music Festival by US concert bible "Pollstar" in 2005 and 2006 alongside world renowned events such as Britain's Glastonbury and Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. And closer to home, Bluesfest has twice won the prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Contemporary Music Festival in Australia, also in 2005 and 2006.
Tickets can be purchased by: Phoning the Bluesfest office on 02 6685 8310
